MSC’s partnership with TRAXENS will enhance supply chain management for shippers through unprecedented visibility of dry cargo flow from door-to-door, adding efficiency, safety and predictability.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, a global leader in container shipping and logistics, is increasingly introducing smart container solutions for customers at many locations around the world, using IoT solutions developed by its partner TRAXENS.

MSC is committed to equipping 50,000 dry cargo containers in the coming months to meet the growing demand from shippers for TRAXENS solutions.

TRAXENS provides shippers with an Internet-connected device to permanently fix on dry cargo containers. This transforms the container into a smart, connected object which collects and communicates real-time data on its position and movements throughout its journey. Other factors which help to keep cargo secure include: temperature, humidity level, shocks and vibrations, door opening and closing.

Lack of real-time, end-to-end visibility is a major issue in today’s global supply chains and until today, no importers or exporters could say they had total visibility over the whole trip.

The use of digital technologies like smart containers will bring substantial gains in efficiency, service, security and safety along the entire supply chain. It will also help manage delays and other problems along the supply chain where historically chasing information has been time-consuming and expensive.

“MSC believes that the real-time tracking of containers is the future of the shipping industry,” said Diego Aponte, President and CEO of MSC Group. “While shipping lines should of course compete on service, we will achieve better results for our customers by working in a more harmonised way on technology and innovation. Smart containers are a perfect example of where we can cooperate according to industry standards to make our services truly comprehensive and TRAXENS is the top innovator in this area.”

In due course, TRAXENS solutions are also expected to facilitate easier and quicker pre-customs clearance for shippers.

Berlin, Germany, September 19, 2018

TRAXENS today announced that ERCI Eurail Clusters has named TRAXENS DIGITAL FREIGHT TRAIN, Europe's first Freight Train to use an innovative IoT-based system allowing digitalization of operations, the winner of their « Coup de Cœur » Innovation Award. The prize has been given to the company at the InnoTrans 2018 tradeshow in Berlin.

Initially launched with Fret SNCF, the TRAXENS DIGITAL FREIGHT TRAIN solution is based on smart devices capable of communicating with each other using wireless digital network. TRAXENS solution goes beyond smart wagons to connect the entire train offering new high-value-added services.

Inherited from the Shipping Industry, TRAXENS DIGITAL FREIGHT TRAIN has been designed to work worldwide and manage any type of asset (e.g., Dry or Reefer container, wagon, trailer) which means that rail freight can be connected to the rest of the supplier chain anywhere, to explore and leverage door-to-door multimodal applications.

« This industry recognition is a major milestone for us. We have achieved to design and implement with our partner SNCF Logistics such a solution in a two-year timeframe, which has never been experienced in the industry. We are looking forward to extending the solution worldwide, said Florence Delalande, Rail Business Unit Director at TRAXENS.

Dirk-Ulrich Krüger, Spokesperson of the European Railway Clusters Initiative, comments: « We are thrilled to recognize next-generation innovation in the railway industry, and that’s why TRAXENS has earned this award from ERCI Eurail Clusters. Some of the best solutions, come from these kinds of forward-thinking players who think outside of the box. »

The DIGITAL FREIGHT TRAIN innovation enables the stakeholders of the railway ecosystem to share benefits and costs:

Railway undertakings optimise their wagon fleet and streamline operations.

Shippers geolocate their shipments in real-time anywhere around the world and receive alerts when their shipment arrives at key locations

Wagon keepers can use preventive and predictive maintenance based on hard facts (accurate mileage tracking, information on abnormal shocks, brake and axle monitoring).

Customized services are possible: remote control, door opening, temperature and humidity monitoring.

SNCF Logistics selects TRAXƎNS to create "The Digital Freight Train"

SNCF Logistics and TRAXƎNS are forming an innovation partnership due to start a brand new generation of freight trains in 2017. They will be equipped with connected units, providing new services to all rail freight players. The project acts as a real catalyst for the implementation of more modern, effective and safe rail freight.

Paris and Marseille, 30th March 2017

The partnership between SNCF Logistics and TRAXƎNS marks the end of a year of research, common work and tests to develop services suitable for rail freight based on a new connected unit solution.

This digital innovation will be operational in the second half of 2017 and will give rise to a new generation of freight trains, which will help improve the performance and appeal of rail in the goods transportation market.

If a majority of shippers say they are willing to resort to more rail freight, they wish that certain criteria such as real-time data and on-time deliveries are better taken into account, which would be guaranteed with future digital freight trains.

TRAXƎNS, a start-up created in Marseille in 2012, is the leader in digital solutions for sea freight. This company notably designed and industrialised the "connected container", providing key information on the transportation and delivery of a shipping container (location, temperature, etc.) in real-time.

Commissioning the digital freight train will meet several additional objectives:

- Providing new, high-added-value services to customers,

- Upgrading the economic model of rail freight by including new maintenance engineering and production processes,

- Improving safety and working conditions for agents,

- Developing new train safety inspection methods

To succeed in this large-scale digital freight train project, SNCF Logistics and TRAXƎNS are working in close collaboration to combine their know-how, knowledge and skills.

SNCF Logistics is providing its expertise on the needs of all players in rail freight and its knowledge on the expectations of goods railway transportation customers in Europe. TRAXƎNS is using its technological expertise gained from inventing and developing connected containers for the shipping sector.

A detailed presentation on the digital freight train will take place on 10 May this year, at the Munich Transport Logistic trade fair.

Alain Picard, CEO of SNCF LOGISTICS, states: "Digital freight train is a major innovation for placing rail freight at the heart of the transportation offering in the 21st Century. Our partnership with TRAXƎNS allows us to invent and implement a solution that will benefit all players in the sector: railway undertakings, railcar leasing companies and shippers".

For TRAXƎNS, “To be chosen by SNCF for the digital freight train is both a huge boost for our young company and validation of our technology, which has proven to be the best solution for the digital train as well as for multi-modal containers.” observed Michel Fallah, Founder and CEO. “This is a promising sign for our development into new markets.”
