Smart container start-up TRAXENS opens its capital to TERTIUM

The investment fund TERTIUM invests in TRAXENS to bring IoT and Big Data benefits to the world of intermodal container shipping.

Marseille 4th November 2015.

Smart container start-up TRAXENS has received 1.5M€ in funding from the French Silicon Valley based investment fund TERTIUM. This capital increase leverages other financing developed with TRAXENS’ banks to support the production ramp-up needed to fulfill the significant order backlog of more than 100K devices and data subscriptions for delivery in 2016. Earlier in the year TRAXENS closed a financing round with shipping giant CMA CGM and two major French banks, Crédit Agricole and BPPC Group, and was awarded 2M€ in the International Innovation Challenge.

“The shipping container has already transformed the world economy, the smart container is the missing link which is going to complete the digital transformation of the supply chain.” said Michel Fallah, TRAXENS CEO & Founder. “We are delighted to work with an investment fund like TERTIUM who specializes in rapidly maturing markets and has understood the huge immediate benefits for the entire manufacturing and retail industry.”

“The investment in TRAXENS fits perfectly into our target of supporting high potential companies in Provence” added TERTIUM’S President Pierre Grand-Dufay. “We have been impressed with the potent combination of innovative technology, IP portfolio, management strength, business model and industrial partnerships. The TRAXENS solution has the potential to establish a worldwide standard.”

Partner Florence Canonge will represent TERTIUM on the TRAXENS’ board.

TRAXENS' technology built in to CMA CGM's biggest ship

  • Unique technology, which transforms containers into smart connected objects
  • Real-time container monitoring through hi-tech devices
  • CMA CGM and TRAXENS: Front runners of Big Data for intermodal transport

Marseille 1st October 2015

The CMA CGM Group, a worldwide leading shipping group founded and let by Jacques Saadé, is pleased to announce that the CMA CGM BOUGAINVILLE is the first container ship in the world to be equipped with TRAXENS technology, which transforms containers into smart connected objects.

Unique technology which transforms containers into smart connected objects

The CMA CGM BOUGAINVILLE, the group’s new 18,000 TEU flagship vessel, has become the first ship in the world using TRAXENS technology. This technology transforms standard containers into smart, connected, objects and introduces the multimodal transportation system into the Big Data era.

The TRAXENS’ equipped smart containers aboard the CMA CGM Bougainville will be able to communicate among themselves and to the ship’s communication infrastructure by using built-in relay antennas, allowing even the most deeply hidden container to be connected.

All the collected data will then be sent to CMA CGM Headquarters in Marseille via TRAXENS’ data centers.

Real-time container monitoring through hi-tech devices

The TRAXENS system collects real-time data throughout the container’s transport whether on land or at sea, adding considerable value to the shipping line and to its customers, insurers, and customs.

A wide range of data from each container can be gathered and transmitted to the CMA CGM group: location, temperature, humidity level, vibrations, impacts, attempted burglary, customs clearance status and more.

The devices provide even greater added value in the refrigerated transport of perishable goods. They can remotely control and adjust the temperature of refrigerated containers and will allow resource optimization for routine inspections.

With more than 12 million containers transported by CMA CGM it means that a huge amount of information will be collected and analyzed with the objective of improving the service provided to the end customers.

CMA CGM increases its investment in startup TRAXENS

• TRAXENS develops innovative container monitoring, geolocation and multimodal coordination systems

• With this investment, CMA CGM introduces Big Data into the transport industry

• CMA CGM will offer its clients unique tracking solutions and real-time data collection from all over the world

9th February 2015

The CMA CGM Group is pleased to announce that they have contributed to the capital increase of French startup TRAXENS.

Two other investment funds – CAAP Création (Crédit Agricole Group) and S.C.R. Provençale et Corse (BPPC Group) – are also part of the initiative.

This capital increase will be dedicated to financing new research and development programs, as well as industrialization.

With 90% of the world’s commercial products being carried by sea, maritime transport is the main mode of transportation. CMA CGM, third largest shipping company in the world, carries over 12 million containers every year. The Group carries all types of products around the globe by sea, and by developing land and logistics solutions.

CMA CGM constant research for high-valued innovative solutions motivated the Group’s decision to reinforce its investment in the startup TRAXENS. With this cooperation, CMA CGM places itself as a precursor in the Big Data implementation in the transport field, and will offer its clients unique tracking solutions and real-time data collecting from all over the world.

Elie Zeenny, CMA CGM Senior Vice President, declares: « With this technology, CMA CGM brings the shipping industry into a new era. In a world where information is the key, we are taking a significant step ahead. We will now be able to collect data in real-time, which is equally important to us and to our clients. Containers are becoming “connected devices”.

In 2015, TRAXENS will equip the first CMA CGM containers with this innovative patented technology. It will now be possible to know in real-time not only a container’s position, but also its temperature, the vibrations it will be subjected to, any attempted burglary, the presence of traces of specific substances in the air or even the regulatory status of the cargo.

Michel Fallah, Founder and President of TRAXENS, notes: « We are very grateful to CMA CGM for supporting us and bringing their expertise from the very beginning of the TRAXENS adventure. It allowed us to develop a high-valued and unique solution that is attractive to all transport companies and to reunite a group of solid and active shareholders which includes the investment companies of large national banks”.
